Thoughts on "India`s Daughter" documentary debate

It has been ages, literally ages since I wrote something but the debate over Nirbhaya Documentary has prompted me to write this piece. Frankly I am confused and hopefully by the time I finish writing I would be clear on whose/which side I am.

One of the most debatable aspects of the documentary is whether it should be aired in India or not and I find it completely nonsensical. The ones in favour of airing have nothing to fuss about as its already out on social media and the ones who would have actually seen it or got any import out of it have already seen it. The ones not in favour of airing are being hypocrites as they themselves have seen it and are now taking judgemental calls for others which they have no right to. To me the bigger point of contention is whether or not a foreigner be allowed to make such a documentary. Do we need a foreign woman to make us understand the pathos the family and the girl went through and the sorry state of affairs for women in India? I am sure rapes and women safety is a problem in other countries as well, so why not reflect on your own land as well. You could argue that India has a much higher no of rapes per day , but its not the number that the documentary intends to attack , it’s the mindset and the mindset of a rapist is same whether he is a black or a white.

The counter argument could be, are we as a nation not willing to allow outsiders to peep inside, to comment and suggest. Are we creating a society which is scared to know what others think of us and are only willing to open few doors, the doors which show the shinier side of India. May be only an outsider has an audacity to show the real face of India just like Leslee Udwin was able to bring about through some very thoughtful interviews of convicts and their lawyers.

It’s a debate which might continue for some more time, but for a moment lets forget about who made the documentary and that it portrays India in a bad light and think about it as a film which is reinforcing that there is an urgent need to do something about the mindset of men in this country and reform the social status of women. I am not sure if we can bring a change in our current or previous generation but we sure can in the future generations. The way we behave and raise our kids would determine how much balance we are able to achieve in the society. While education and economic development will have its own role, its important we exercise and provide the right to each man and woman to be just Free!!

Orange Pie

I reached her home dressed in a suit and tie
and all she had got was an Orange Pie

The orange pie was awesome but too less
Just like the love between the two of us

My tie let loose, we made love
Some orange pie was still left on the stove

And while I put back on,  my suit and tie
She had already cleared what was left of the Orange Pie

@2 in the night

Its at 2 in the night, when you have smoked that last cigg, emptied the beer cans and have actually nothing much to do. The darkness of the night and the sound of your fan is what you can feel around you. Hopelessly trying to find friends you really want to talk to, refresh your FB page or the gmail and then just because you have nothing to do ping any aquaintance of yours and ask "hey wass up , long time " But how long can you keep that sort of conversation going and you are back to square one !! Thats when you feel empty .. and this feeling has its own repurcussions

With nothing to think about future you reminisce over your past, skim through your ex`s profile ,think about what you did, how you did and why you did and at last the most difficult of all what are you doing differently now. And obviously because I dont have a satisfactory answer for the last one, i start questioning myself isnt it time to sleep ? There is another question that comes to the mind , is it the time to start thinking about getting married ? Cos I am losing friends daily to the institution of marriage and no longer their status reads available. And humans cant live alone, least of all me !! But a minute later thinking about marriage seems scarier than 'paranormal activity' and the best way I can help myself is to grab my cushions ,increase my fan speed (and hence the sound) ,put my tortured laptop to some well deserved rest and go to sleep...

Guzarish !!

Its SLB, and I could not have miss it. For someone who even liked Sawariya, to watch Guzarish was rather a compulsion.

The first 5 mins of the movie and I thought I am in for yet another treat from Mr SLB. A different set blended with beautiful colours reminds you of Sawariya , the round curtains in Athen`s room ..Splendid. But as it progresses, somehow it loses its grip on the audience. The side characters (Lawyer, magician, doctor) do not really excel and I thought there could have been better actors for these roles. May be it was done to prevent any threat to the characters of Hrithik and Aish.

Talking about the characters, Hrithik while acted superbly but to me his baritone was not matching to the situation, A bit more deeper baritone would have done magic for me. Aishwarya Rai on the other hand was just perfect, I just loved seeing her performing this role. SLB really brings out the best in her.
Being an SLB film , it did have its moments. Some really good ones, like the scene where Athen`s helplessness is compared with a crowman or where he fights with the falling raindrops. And then there was this song Udi in the pub which Aish really carries off all alone to such a great level. The song suddenly comes out of nowhere and brings in so much energy with it. But then there were disappointing scenes too, like the stupid news channel reporting scenes (so cliched) or the court session scenes which have been made either idiotically funny or too sentimental or the last scene when everyone jumps over Athen. The magic acts apart from one did not really leave the impact they should have.

Overall, it was a disappointment to me but it still remains the only Hindi movie I did like to watch in the recent past and still goes as a movie which is sensible in its approach and deserves to be watched.

Hope !!

A look at my Past,
and I Wonder
If it was a Surrender
Or just a Teen-age Blunder

A look at my present
and I Realise
There is so much to life

A look at my Past
and I Wish
I get back all the fun
Minus The ONE

A look at my present
and I Hope
may I always hope ......

........

A sleepless night and a melody
lump in the throat and a shivering body

A tear and an unforgettable past
and a hope that never last

A heart and an empty space
and a future without a face

A room and the darkness
music, memories and the emptiness

A laptop and a deleted past
did I do it too fast

A feeling as sharp as knife
A moment as big as life

Pamper yourself

Its a rat race and we all are competing .. Talk to people slogging out late nights in the office , rarely finding time for themselves and others ,life for them sucks , actually !!
A late night conversation with a friend transpired the abysmal indifference we develop towards life. Isnt death better than putting yourself through this tyranny everyday. For whom are we doing it ? he asked .. and my answer to him - Do it for yourself . Selfish .... , he said
Selfish, yeah we all should be , we all are , some concede , some hide .
It is important that you feel happy about your life , to feel that its not life who is fucking you, but you who is fucking life , the green, yellow, pink paper in your wallets is only worth paper unless you do what money is meant to do, "BUY" , buy happiness....
Happiness, can it be bought ? Without sounding too materialistic , I would like to say YES, it can be bought ..... Its stupid to think of happiness as something eternal and too big, start finding it in smaller things ... How often you felt I should have this gadget or this shoe on display or this suit ,but decided against buying it, well BUY it and you will feel the power of money for which you slog 5 days a week. Pamper yourself, that is the key to stay alive , find a motive to earn ....
